Our Concrete Commitments to More Responsible Tourism in the Verdon Gorge

Preserving an exceptional territory — a long-standing commitment

Nestled in the heart of one of Europe’s most well-preserved natural environments, the Verdon Gorge represents a fragile heritage that everyone has a responsibility to protect. Since its creation in 1973, Hôtel & Spa des Gorges du Verdon has been designed in harmony with the surrounding nature.

A family-run business for several generations, the hotel has grown with a constant conviction: to offer a high-quality hospitality experience while deeply respecting the territory that surrounds it. Today, this commitment continues to guide every decision we make.

Commitments recognized through demanding environmental certifications

In order to structure and continuously improve our approach, we have relied for more than fifteen years on recognized environmental standards.

The hotel is notably committed to the Green Key program, the leading international eco-label dedicated to sustainable tourism, as well as the European Ecolabel, which guarantees responsible management of natural resources, energy, and waste.

We are also members of the Hôtels au Naturel network and certified under the Valeurs Parc naturel régional label, reaffirming our determination to take concrete action within the Verdon region.

These frameworks involve regular audits and continuous improvement of our practices, going far beyond simple declarations of intent.

Reducing our environmental impact sustainably

On a daily basis, numerous actions help limit our energy and environmental footprint: installation of solar panels, fully LED lighting, heat pumps for the swimming pool and spa, as well as an electricity contract sourced from renewable energy.

Water management also receives particular attention through rainwater harvesting, flow regulators, and a responsible linen policy, with room linens replaced only upon request.

These technical measures, often invisible to our guests, actively contribute to more responsible tourism.

Protecting biodiversity in the heart of the Verdon

Located in a remarkable natural environment, the hotel takes concrete action to protect local biodiversity. A green roof, Mediterranean climate-adapted plantings, and a drastic reduction in phytosanitary products help preserve surrounding ecosystems.

Several beehives installed nearby contribute to bee protection and the production of local honey, while our aromatic herb gardens directly supply the kitchen and bar.

These initiatives help maintain a balance between tourism activity and respect for living ecosystems.

Reducing waste and encouraging responsible practices

The gradual elimination of single-use plastics, the widespread implementation of waste sorting throughout the establishment, and the composting of organic waste are integral parts of our operations.

We also encourage our guests to participate easily in this approach through simple eco-friendly actions during their stay: reusing linens, sorting waste, and mindful energy consumption.

Because sustainable tourism relies on shared responsibility.

Actively supporting the local area and its stakeholders

Our environmental commitment goes hand in hand with a strong social and local commitment. The restaurant prioritizes seasonal products sourced through short supply chains and promotes regional producers.

We also support local artisans, associations, and initiatives through various solidarity actions and actively participate in the life of the Verdon region throughout the year.

Protecting the environment also means protecting those who live within it.

A living commitment focused on the future

More than an accumulation of labels or occasional initiatives, our approach is rooted in a commitment to continuous improvement. Each member of our team is trained in environmental best practices and contributes daily to this engagement.

Staying in the Verdon Gorge thus becomes a nature-respectful experience where comfort, well-being, and responsibility move forward together.

The Luxury of Calm: Discovering the Verdon in the Off-Season

When silence becomes a privilege

As summer draws to a close, the Gorges du Verdon gradually return to a more natural rhythm. The roads grow quieter, the hiking trails more spacious, and the villages rediscover their gentle pace of life. The off-season marks the return of a rare and precious luxury: calm.

In this landscape shaped by nature, silence is never empty. It is filled with the wind brushing the cliffs, the rustling of trees, and the changing light throughout the day. Discovering the Verdon at this time of year means allowing yourself to slow down and fully embrace the present moment.

A more intimate atmosphere

In September and early autumn, the experience of the Verdon subtly transforms. The landscapes retain their brilliance, yet the atmosphere becomes more confidential. Panoramic views can be enjoyed without haste, breaks naturally last longer, and each place feels more accessible.

This quieter ambiance changes the way you experience your stay. You take time to observe, to walk without watching the clock, to pause wherever the light catches your eye. The region reveals itself with greater depth.

Golden light over the canyon

The off-season also brings a distinctive quality of light. Softer and more angled, it highlights the limestone cliffs and wraps the landscape in warm tones.

Late afternoons become especially memorable moments: the sun slowly disappears behind the mountains, the cliffs glow in golden hues, and the air gently cools. At over 900 meters above sea level, the evening freshness offers a naturally pleasant comfort.

Taking time to care for yourself

The off-season is often chosen by those seeking a more peaceful escape. After the intensity of summer, this period offers the opportunity to truly unwind.

Alternating between walks in unspoiled nature and moments of relaxation feels effortless. Time seems more available, the surroundings more serene. Well-being takes on a deeper meaning — less about summer excitement, more about genuine reconnection.

Staying in the heart of the Gorges du Verdon during this time allows you to fully embrace this atmosphere of renewal.

Rediscovering the Verdon differently

Choosing the off-season means stepping aside from the usual pace. It means valuing experience over performance, quality of moments over quantity of activities.

The Verdon reveals its authentic character: preserved landscapes, a peaceful rhythm, and rediscovered space. Away from the crowds, your stay becomes more personal, almost confidential.

In a world that moves ever faster, indulging in the luxury of calm in the heart of the Gorges du Verdon may well be one of the most beautiful ways to travel.

After a restful night, breakfast becomes a privileged moment. Fresh products, local flavors, and an unhurried rhythm encourage guests to simply take their time. From the terrace or restaurant dining room, the scenery already invites a sense of escape.

Exploring the Verdon Gorge in the open air

The morning naturally lends itself to discovering the surrounding area. From the hotel, numerous routes provide quick access to the Verdon’s most iconic sites.

Panoramic hikes, exploring the Route des Crêtes, or strolling through nearby villages — everyone can shape the day according to their wishes. Nature lovers particularly appreciate the immediate proximity of hiking trails, offering rapid immersion into the canyon’s spectacular landscapes.

This morning exploration allows visitors to fully enjoy the freshness and tranquility of the Verdon Gorge.

A relaxing midday break

After an active morning, returning to the hotel marks a natural transition toward relaxation. A few moments by the pool or a quiet rest are enough to slow the pace and fully appreciate the surrounding setting.

The Verdon encourages visitors to take their time: reading, contemplating the mountains, or simply enjoying the silence becomes an essential part of the experience.

The wellness experience: a moment for yourself

The afternoon is ideally extended with a visit to the spa. Hammam, sauna, pool, or relaxing treatments help release accumulated tension and soothe the body after outdoor activities.

A massage or wellness ritual perfectly completes the day, creating a harmonious balance between energy and relaxation. In this peaceful environment, letting go comes naturally.

A convivial evening to end the day

As evening light softens over the Verdon landscapes, the atmosphere becomes even more serene. Dinner offers a convivial moment, highlighting cuisine inspired by local traditions and seasonal products.

The evening continues in the quietness of the village, far from any bustle, before returning to the comfort of your room for a peaceful night surrounded by nature.

The Verdon Differently: Experiencing Summer Evenings in the Mountains

When the Verdon Regains Its Calm

During the day, the Verdon Gorges reveal all their energy: spectacular landscapes, outdoor activities, and discoveries naturally set the rhythm of summer holidays. But as the sun begins to set, the region unveils a different atmosphere — more intimate and soothing.

Summer evenings undoubtedly offer one of the most precious moments of a stay in the Verdon. The light becomes softer, temperatures cool down, and silence gradually returns to the heart of the mountains.

In La Palud-sur-Verdon, perched at over 900 meters above sea level, this transition can be fully experienced.

The Welcome Coolness After the Heat of the Day

One of the great privileges of a summer stay in the mountains lies in the natural coolness of late afternoons and evenings. After a day spent exploring the Verdon Gorges or the surrounding villages, the air becomes lighter and naturally invites you to slow down.

Unlike coastal destinations often marked by warm nights, evenings at higher altitude allow you to fully enjoy outdoor spaces and appreciate particularly pleasant comfort.

Terraces, gardens, or swimming pools then become ideal places to gently extend the day.

A Unique Light Over the Verdon Landscapes

As the sun dips behind the ridges, the limestone cliffs are dressed in golden and pink hues. This end-of-day light transforms the panoramas and offers a different perspective on the landscape.

The viewpoints around the village provide the opportunity to observe this natural spectacle in a peaceful atmosphere, far from the bustle of midday hours. Photographers, contemplative travelers, or simply nature lovers find in these moments a suspended interlude.

The Verdon reveals itself differently — in calm and contemplation.

The Pleasure of Extending the Day in Complete Serenity

Summer evenings are also synonymous with conviviality and relaxation. After effort or exploration comes the time to fully savor the present moment: a dinner featuring seasonal flavors, a long conversation on the terrace, or simply the pleasure of doing nothing.

This slower rhythm is an integral part of the experience of staying in the Verdon Gorges. Far from agitation, each moment gains in intensity.

Gazing at the Verdon’s Starry Sky

When night falls, the spectacle continues. Far from major urban areas, the Verdon benefits from a sky remarkably preserved from light pollution.

Summer evenings thus become an opportunity to observe the stars under exceptional conditions. From the heights of La Palud-sur-Verdon, the sky reveals its full depth and reminds visitors of the region’s outstanding natural richness.

A simple, often unexpected moment that leaves a lasting impression on holiday memories.

Another Way to Experience the Verdon in Summer

If the days invite exploration, the evenings allow you to reconnect with what truly matters. Between mountain freshness, soothing light, and restored calm, summer in the Verdon takes on a special dimension.

Staying in the heart of the Verdon Gorges also means discovering these quieter moments, when nature slows down and time seems to stand still — an authentic experience that embodies the true charm of summer evenings in the mountains.

What to Do in the Verdon When It Rains?

Discovering another side of the Verdon Gorge

Even under cloudier skies, the Verdon Gorge retains all its charm. While the region is well known for its sunshine, a few cooler or rainy days may occur during a stay, offering the perfect opportunity to experience the destination differently.

Rather than disrupting a holiday, these moments simply invite visitors to slow down and enjoy alternative experiences combining discovery, relaxation, and culinary pleasures. Staying at Hôtel & Spa des Gorges du Verdon allows guests to fully enjoy the Verdon whatever the weather conditions.

Taking time to discover the Verdon’s villages

A rainy day becomes the ideal occasion to explore nearby villages. Narrow streets, stone houses, and small Provençal squares create a particularly pleasant atmosphere when visitor numbers are lower.

Artisan boutiques, local galleries, or coffee breaks sheltered from the rain offer a more intimate way to discover local heritage and the Provençal art of living. These gentle excursions encourage unhurried wandering and appreciation of the region’s peaceful rhythm.

Exploring local heritage and craftsmanship

The Verdon also boasts a cultural richness that is often overlooked. Local museums, regional product houses, and encounters with artisans provide insight into the history and traditions of the area.

These cultural experiences perfectly complement the outdoor activities usually favored during a stay in the Verdon Gorge and offer an enriching alternative when the weather turns unpredictable.

Enjoying a true wellness escape

Rain also becomes the perfect excuse to indulge in relaxation. After several days of outdoor activities, slowing down and taking care of oneself becomes an essential part of the stay.

Hammam, sauna, indoor pool, or relaxing treatments help release tension and create a timeless moment of calm. The contrast between the outdoor atmosphere and the comforting warmth of a wellness space enhances the feeling of comfort and relaxation.

These moments often transform a rainy day into one of the most memorable highlights of the stay.

Enjoying the Verdon’s tranquility differently

When the weather encourages staying indoors, the Verdon reveals a softer and more peaceful atmosphere. Reading, watching the changing landscapes, or simply enjoying the surrounding calm allows guests to fully embrace this pause away from daily life.

A successful stay does not depend solely on sunshine, but on the ability to appreciate each moment and adapt one’s rhythm to nature.

A rewarding experience in any weather

In the Verdon Gorge, every season and every type of weather offers a different experience. Grey days become an opportunity to discover the region from another perspective, combining relaxation, heritage, and well-being.

Even in the rain, the Verdon remains a rejuvenating destination where comfort, serenity, and discovery continue to define the experience.

The Gorges du Verdon through the centuries: History and heritage of La Palud-sur-Verdon

A territory shaped by nature and people
Today recognized as one of Europe’s most beautiful natural sites, the Gorges du Verdon boast a rich history closely linked to the surrounding villages. Long before becoming a major tourist destination, the Verdon was above all a place of life, shaped by generations who learned to live alongside a spectacular yet demanding natural environment.

Located at the heart of the canyon, the village of La Palud-sur-Verdon has, for centuries, served as a strategic passage point and privileged observation site overlooking this exceptional territory. Staying at Hôtel & Spa des Gorges du Verdon therefore also means discovering a place deeply rooted in the history of the Verdon.

The origins of the Gorges du Verdon
Long before human presence, the Gorges du Verdon were formed over millions of years through the combined action of water and erosion. The Verdon River gradually carved through limestone rock, creating the spectacular canyon whose cliffs now reach heights of more than 700 meters in certain areas.

This impressive landscape long made the region difficult to access, helping preserve its wild and authentic character.

For centuries, only local inhabitants, shepherds, and farmers crossed these plateaus and valleys, living according to the rhythm of the seasons and natural resources.

La Palud-sur-Verdon: A village at the heart of the canyon
Perched on the heights, La Palud-sur-Verdon developed as an agricultural and pastoral village. Its strategic location once allowed residents to monitor passageways and cultivate surrounding land despite the mountainous terrain.

Even today, walking through its narrow streets reveals traces of this history: stone houses, traditional Provençal architecture, and a peaceful atmosphere reflecting a well-preserved heritage.

The village maintains an authentic identity, far from the bustle of major tourist destinations, offering genuine immersion in the local history of the Verdon.

The canyon discovered by explorers
It was not until the early 20th century that the Gorges du Verdon were truly explored. In 1905, explorer Édouard-Alfred Martel, considered the father of modern speleology, completed the first full crossing of the canyon.

This expedition marked a major turning point: the Verdon began attracting scientists, adventurers, and later travelers fascinated by the site’s exceptional beauty.

Gradually, panoramic roads and hiking trails were developed, allowing a wider public to discover this unique landscape while preserving its natural balance.

A preserved natural and cultural heritage
Today, the Gorges du Verdon are part of a sustainable preservation and enhancement approach. The region maintains a valuable balance between tourism activity, environmental protection, and the transmission of local traditions.

Villages, artisanal expertise, and landscapes shaped by history all contribute to the identity of the Verdon. This cultural richness enhances the natural experience and adds depth to every stay.

Staying at the heart of a living history
Discovering the Verdon means not only admiring its landscapes but also understanding the history that shaped them. Combining heritage, nature, and the Provençal art of living, La Palud-sur-Verdon offers authentic immersion in a territory that has remained true to its identity.

A stay in the Gorges du Verdon thus becomes an encounter with a place steeped in history, where every panorama tells the story of centuries of interaction between humanity and nature.
